What happened
Lake Bonneville was a massive lake that formed during a cool, wet period beginning approximately 55,000 years ago. Volcanic activity diverted rivers and created natural basins, allowing water to accumulate across what is now western Utah and parts of Nevada and Idaho. At its peak, the lake covered an area comparable to Lake Michigan.
About 18,000 years ago, a natural dam holding the lake's water breached, causing a massive flood that drastically reduced its volume by over 350 feet in just six weeks.
