What happened
Varanashi Farms, a 200-year-old family-owned organic farm in Karnataka, officially launched a commercial agritourism experience in 2014. This initiative grew from years of welcoming guests informally and a key moment in 2006 when a young visitor was inspired to pursue horticulture after spending time at the farm. Encouraged by this, Partha Varanashi and his family crafted a program where city dwellers can live and learn about organic farming on the land.
Inspired by farming volunteer programs abroad, the farm opened up to volunteers who spend 21 days engaging in a variety of farm activities, including seed planting, harvesting, and composting, while receiving meals largely made from farm-grown produce. Additional offerings include a certification course on organic farming and life skills workshops like first aid and survival training.
Why it feels good
The experience offers a refreshing break from urban life by connecting people to nature, agriculture, and traditional farming knowledge. Volunteers learn about sustainable practices, such as using biofertilizers instead of chemical inputs, which foster regenerative agriculture and environmental well-being. This hands-on approach makes the learning both practical and fulfilling.
Beyond farming, participants enjoy nature-based activities and a unique stay in a handcrafted treehouse that stands impressively without stilts, offering tranquil views from a 55-foot height. The farm also leads engaging trails, like the cacao-to-chocolate experience, enriching guests' appreciation for food sources and craftsmanship.
What to enjoy or watch next
Visitors can take advantage of the comprehensive 21-day volunteer program or opt for shorter certified courses available for a fee. These offerings blend education on organic farming techniques with experiential activities such as swimming, kayaking, and trampolining, led by certified instructors. The free demonstrations allow everyone to explore new skills during their stay.
Looking ahead, the farm plans to continue promoting agritourism while expanding opportunities for visitors to connect with traditional and innovative farming ways. Those interested in nature, sustainability, and immersive rural experiences will find Varanashi Farms a welcoming destination that nurtures both learning and leisure.
