What happened
The Congaree River continuously carves through its flat floodplain in South Carolina, creating winding bends, oxbow lakes, and abandoned channels known locally as sloughs. This natural river migration forms a patchwork of landforms with varying flood patterns that support diverse habitats.
Over time, sediment deposits accumulate on the inside of river bends, occasionally isolating segments of the river into oxbow lakes such as Weston Lake and Bates Old River. These water bodies evolve, some filling in to become shallow wetlands dominated by flood-tolerant cypress and tupelo trees.
