What happened
K-Thengono Design Studio completed a luxury residence named Split Mass Residence in South Tangerang, Indonesia. The 712-square-meter home is arranged around a unique split upper volume that cleverly combines indoor amenities such as a home cinema with outdoor spaces like a rooftop swimming pool and yoga area. This innovative design makes the roof itself a central living and recreational feature.
Situated on a 430-square-meter corner plot, the house maximizes privacy and connection to natural elements. The ground floor includes functional spaces such as a guest room, staff quarters, and office, while the first floor offers open living areas with minimal furnishings, timber and stone finishes, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking landscaped gardens.
Why it feels good
The design emphasizes openness and seamless circulation, allowing daylight and breezes to flow freely through the home. Adjustable rattan panels provide privacy without sacrificing ventilation or natural light, creating an airy, comfortable environment. Rounded corners and bamboo-textured concrete soften the visual impression of the architecture, blending a modern aesthetic with natural warmth.
The rooftop garden is a standout feature, offering a tranquil green space elevated above the urban surroundings. The grass-covered slope leads to an elevated platform for yoga or meditation, with a sunken lounge area, barbecue, dining space, and bathroom to support diverse activities and relaxation. This thoughtful integration of nature and leisure enhances residents’ well-being.
What to enjoy or watch next
The spatial experience of moving through the home—from the ground floor courtyard to the rooftop cinema and garden—is designed to connect daily life with landscape, light, and ventilation. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy movie screenings in a stepped cinema area or unwind in the rooftop spa-like environment, making the home as versatile as it is beautiful.
The collaboration with landscape consultants Studio Asa adds further dimension to the carefully planned exterior spaces, making the Split Mass Residence a great example to watch for those interested in sustainable luxury homes. This project sets a precedent for multifunctional rooftop living with a focus on comfort and environmental harmony.
