The team enhanced the fungi’s capabilities by adding engineered yeast capable of producing various vibrant colors—blue, red, orange, and purple—directly within the fabric, eliminating the need for chemical dyes. Additional nutrients applied under humid conditions allowed the fabric to regenerate, repair itself, grow intricate patterns, and develop water-repellent coatings naturally.
