When Dhriti, a child with Down syndrome, began expressing herself through art, her mother Shweta Runwal saw a powerful form of communication that transformed her understanding of possibility. This insight blossomed into 'Tickle Your Art,' a Mumbai-based social venture showcasing artwork by neurodiverse artists on lifestyle products and beyond.
- Art as a unique form of expression for neurodiverse individuals
- A social enterprise supporting artists with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities
- Community center offering training and employment for artists
What happened
Dhriti was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after birth, alongside other health concerns. While early challenges included societal assumptions about her abilities, her mother Shweta chose to focus on what Dhriti could express, discover, and create. Dhriti’s first drawing, which communicated feelings she couldn’t yet verbalize, opened her mother’s eyes to the possibility of art as a powerful communication tool.
This experience inspired Shweta to support not only her daughter but other neurodiverse children. Starting with art classes and a small exhibition in 2018, Shweta formalized this initiative into the social enterprise 'Tickle Your Art' in 2020. Today, the organization has engaged more than 25 neurodiverse artists, turning their original artwork into lifestyle products and hosting a community center to empower these artists.
Why it feels good
Tickle Your Art challenges preconceived notions about people with intellectual disabilities by highlighting their creativity and individuality. For families and communities, it offers a shift from focusing on limitations to celebrating unique talents and stories. This approach fosters inclusion and dignity for artists who are often overlooked.
The initiative’s success brings a sense of hope and possibility not just for the artists but for everyone involved. It exemplifies how empathy, creativity, and community support can create meaningful social change, encouraging society to recognize the value and contributions of neurodiverse individuals.
