MIT engineers have created the World-Space Interface (WSI), a mechanical mini excavator arm that users physically manipulate like their own arm. This input device allows operators to control an excavator intuitively by mimicking natural arm and hand movements instead of translating joystick inputs. In tests, novice operators reached expert-level performance in virtual excavator tasks after only a single training session.
The researchers developed 15 training scenarios to evaluate various excavation tasks, including digging, grading, debris clearing, and rock breaking across different environments such as construction sites, riverbanks, and forest roads. Compared to the traditional joystick setup, the WSI enabled beginners to perform on par with experienced operators from the outset, eliminating the steep learning curve soldered into current controls.
