What happened
Three students — Garvit Dudeja from Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) Jaipur, Priyansh Joshi from the same college, and Lakshya Mangla from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) — developed Swappr, an AI-driven app to help college students buy, sell, and swap items more efficiently on campus. Their journey started in a hostel room filled with laptops, where they turned conversations and lessons from past ventures into a fresh, peer-focused platform.
After encountering challenges such as scams and undervaluing items in informal groups, the trio decided to build an easy-to-use app that made exchanging things seamless. Swappr leverages simple swipe mechanics familiar to students from social and shopping apps, adding AI to match users effectively and make transactions more enjoyable. It has since gained traction with over 1,700 users across 10 colleges, supported by seed funding from Google.
Why it feels good
Swappr meets students where they already engage daily by merging the addictive nature of swiping with practical buying and selling needs. It transforms a chaotic process—usually done via messy WhatsApp groups—into a smooth, curated marketplace that respects the value of items and offers greater convenience.
Additionally, the app’s integration of rewards, coupons, and brand partnerships taps into the joy of instant gratification. Small incentives keep users excited and returning, turning everyday exchanges into a playful and worthwhile experience. This thoughtful approach reflects the team’s insight into student behavior and their desire to build something they love.
What to enjoy or watch next
As Swappr continues to expand, college communities can look forward to more ways to save money and reduce waste simply by connecting with peers on their campuses. With its growing user base, the app may soon introduce enhanced AI features to personalize matches further and streamline exchanges even more intuitively.
Future updates might also include broader brand deals and exclusive discounts that complement students’ budgets and lifestyles. Meanwhile, students interested in sustainable shopping and clever money-saving tools can watch Swappr as a promising example of tech-driven campus innovation born from genuine student challenges.
