Ryukoku University professor Takahiko Nakaoki and Hiroyuki Kakinoki, president of Kakinoki Fireworks Industry Co., developed and launched water-soluble fireworks shells and canisters. This innovation uses water-soluble resin, a material already common in agriculture, to create components that naturally disintegrate soon after the fireworks are set off.
The project started in 2018 when Mr. Kakinoki sought eco-friendlier alternatives but faced challenges working with resins. Instead of synthesizing brand new materials, the team adapted an existing harmless medium that, once wet, breaks down like hot caramel, leaving little to no lasting waste. Their goal for this year is to produce 20,000 shells, with half being eco-friendly versions.
