What started in 2017 as a small group tackling post-Ganpati pollution on Dadar Beach has blossomed into a vibrant, nine-year volunteer campaign sweeping four key beaches in Mumbai every Saturday, keeping thousands of tonnes of waste out of the ocean.

What happened
In September 2017, Chinu Kwatra encountered broken Ganpati idol pieces and scattered plastic waste along Dadar Beach, prompting him to organize a cleanup event that morning. What began with about a dozen volunteers soon became a continuing effort spurred by community interest and a professor’s encouragement to ensure the initiative didn’t end with a single day of work.
Building on that momentum, Chinu and his team organized regular Saturday cleanups and gained visibility as students and other beachgoers joined the effort simply by witnessing the volunteer activity. The movement gradually expanded beyond Dadar Beach to include other locations like Prabhadevi, Juhu Koliwada, and Juhu Silver Beach, now collectively known as Beach Warriors.
